Fall is the best time of the year for outdoor home improvement projects. The weather is perfect so it’s the perfect time to do things that turn your house into a home.
Outdoor Home Improvement Idea #1: Add Lighting
It’s amazing what a little lighting can do. Have you ever been to a friend’s house or restaurant where they had string lights hung above the outdoor patio? Or maybe you were thankful for having some lights next to the path to get to a friend’s backyard for an evening around the fire pit?
Adding a few lighting elements around the outside of your home makes a world of difference. Here are two specific ideas to look into.
Hang string lights – these can go above your patio, next to a path to light the way, in a wide circle around your fire pit, or under a portico or pergola. They add an element of class but are inexpensive and easy to install.
Put solar lights along walkways and the driveway – solar lighting has come a long way over the years. It’s inexpensive, the lights are bright and last a long time. They give your house an upper-class feel without requiring an upper-class cost.
Outdoor Home Improvement Idea #2: Build a Patio
Are you happy with your current patio? If so, you can skip this section. If not, maybe the project to undertake over the next few months is to build a patio you love.
A patio is a great way to enjoy the outdoors without having to walk far from your house. You can easily step back inside to get some food or drinks. You should have plenty of lighting from your outdoor light – even more so if you install other lights like string lights or solar lanterns.
Don’t think your patio needs to look a certain way. While most patios tend to be the same (ie. a square or rectangular slab of concrete), feel free to do something different. Build something you’d be proud of and love to sit on.
For example, maybe you want to build a low deck instead of a concrete patio. You could choose to make the patio with pavers. Or you can go the concrete route but either apply a pattern to it or give it a more interesting, rounded shape so it’s not boring.
Outdoor Home Improvement Idea #3: Build a Fire Pit
Fire pits are common for a few reasons:
- They’re easy to build
- It doesn’t cost a lot of money to buy a fire pit or build your own
- Sitting around a fire with friends is one of life’s greatest joys
Just like anything else, you can spend as much time and money as you want on a fire pit. The cheapest option is to buy an inexpensive metal one for about $30. You can also build a pretty nice one using retaining wall blocks for less than $100. On the other hand, you can build a really nice, big outdoor fireplace that costs hundreds of dollars worth of materials but will stand the test of time.
