Should You Update Your Kitchen?

Should you update your kitchen? Everyone’s situation is a bit different, so it’s hard to give a black and white answer. That said, here are a few instances where it might make sense to give your kitchen a facelift.

Update Your Kitchen if it’s Falling Apart

Has your kitchen seen better days? Maybe the cabinets are barely attached to the wall or have a huge gap behind them. Every time you’re standing there preparing food, you’re half-expecting some kind of creature to come out of that huge gap. Or maybe the floor is in rough shape because your dogs push their metal water bowl around, spilling water on the hardwood and scrape it up.

Kitchens get worn down over time. Once it gets so dilapidated that you’re concerned someone will get hurt or further damage will occur, it may be time to update. Just make sure you do it in the right sequence. If you know you’ll be replacing the floors, it doesn’t make sense to do that first!

Update Your Kitchen if it’s Outdated

Falling apart and outdated are two different things. Your kitchen might be 30 years old and in great shape, but have hideous colors, countertops, and fixtures. In that case, we wouldn’t consider it in the “falling apart” category. Instead, it just falls in the category of being old, outdated, and mentally draining on you.

If you plan on living in the home for a while, consider updating the kitchen. There are a few advantages to it.

First, you’ll feel a weight off your shoulders. You won’t feel like you “should” do it anymore, because it’s already done.

Second, you’ll be proud of it! You may find yourself inviting friends and family over just to find an excuse to show it off.

Third, you’re creating a small, safe sanctuary within your home. This is especially important if it wasn’t the only room that was outdated and needed a facelift.

Upgrade Your Kitchen if You Want to Sell

Your kitchen is one of the best rooms to give you a decent ROI when it comes to reselling your home. Homebuyers expect a nice, clean, modern kitchen. They don’t want to feel like they’re in the middle of an old movie from 30 years ago. Likewise, they don’t want to be cooking, eating, and living in an HGTV show because the kitchen needs so many updates.

That’s why having a beautiful, modern kitchen is almost guaranteed to help your home sell faster and for more money.

Sure, some homebuyers that come through may think to themselves, “I would have used a different backsplash,” or “I prefer a different type of countertop.” But overall it’s a big net gain. You’ll get more buyers walking through the home and more offers by having a beautiful, functional kitchen.
